Kingdom Hearts Collection Brings Two Decades of PlayStation-Era Adventures to Modern Hardware
Square Enix launches Kingdom Hearts Collection I–III natively on Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows, gathering over two decades of adventures originating on the PS2.
Square Enix's Kingdom Hearts Collection I–III reaches its official October 8 release date, gathering the sprawling Disney-meets-Japanese-RPG saga into a modern package for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Windows through Microsoft's storefront. The collection contains Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue and Kingdom Hearts III with its Re Mind expansion. For retro enthusiasts, the most significant attraction is the opportunity to revisit adventures that began on the PlayStation 2 in 2002 without assembling several generations of original hardware. The Nintendo Switch 2 version is particularly noteworthy because the previous Switch releases depended on cloud streaming, whereas the new collection runs natively on the hardware. Physical editions are available for selected platforms and markets, although the Switch 2 physical version requires additional downloadable data. Square Enix has also confirmed that the individual components can be purchased separately. The package arrives as the series approaches its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2027 and provides a relatively straightforward entry point before Kingdom Hearts IV. Straightforward is admittedly a relative term here. The franchise's story involves numerous interconnected adventures, multiple versions of familiar characters and enough mysterious organisations to occupy an entire government department. Still, bringing the earlier games together on current hardware is a welcome improvement for accessibility and long-term preservation. Players can now experience the beginning of Sora's adventures without needing a functioning PS2, a collection of memory cards and a degree in fictional chronology.
