Sega's stylish Dreamcast classic Jet Set Radio is receiving an unexpected portable conversion through JGR Portable, an unofficial project designed to run natively on Sony's PlayStation Portable. Developer beckerd has published a public beta that adapts the original game's technology and controls for PSP hardware. Jet Set Radio originally appeared on Dreamcast in 2000 and became famous for its cel-shaded graphics, energetic soundtrack and unusual combination of skating and graffiti. Players control members of the GGs, a group of inline skaters competing for territory across the fictional city of Tokyo-to. The PSP adaptation preserves the familiar skating and tagging mechanics while replacing the original Dreamcast control scheme with inputs suited to Sony's handheld. The developer reports compatibility with several PSP models, including the original PSP-1000, later revisions and PSP Go. However, the project does not distribute Sega's commercial game assets. Users must provide compatible data from the North American Dreamcast release, specifically in GDI format, and prepare those files using the supplied conversion tools. European and Japanese versions are not currently supported. Performance and compatibility remain inconsistent because the project is still in beta development. Nevertheless, the conversion is significant because it does not rely on full Dreamcast emulation. Instead, it attempts to bring the game directly to another hardware platform. The PSP was already a fashionable portable console. Apparently someone decided it could become even more fashionable by adding rollerblades and an unreasonable amount of graffiti.
