Infested DX Revives Classic DOS-Style Horror Adventures With New Steam Demo
Publisher Komi Games and developer GrahfMetal release a Steam demo for Infested DX, an atmospheric 16-bit sci-fi horror adventure launching October 27.
Fans of the atmospheric horror adventures that populated DOS computers during the late 1980s and early 1990s have received a new reason to investigate a particularly unpleasant spaceship. Publisher Komi Games has confirmed that Infested DX will launch on Steam on October 27, accompanied by a newly available playable demonstration. Developed with GrahfMetal, Infested DX revisits an earlier independent adventure inspired by classic first-person point-and-click games and science-fiction horror films. Players control the surviving member of a disastrous space expedition, exploring an apparently abandoned spacecraft while attempting to discover what happened to the crew. Naturally, the ship is considerably less abandoned than it first appears. Dangerous creatures, malfunctioning machinery and environmental hazards turn exploration into a sequence of increasingly desperate decisions. Progress depends on examining surroundings, collecting useful objects, solving puzzles and avoiding situations that could produce an exceptionally unpleasant death. The DX edition substantially expands the earlier release. Its visual presentation has been upgraded from an 8-bit-inspired appearance to more detailed 16-bit-style pixel artwork, while audio and interface elements have also been revised. The developers have expanded the map and story, introduced gamepad-friendly controls and implemented convenient save functionality. These improvements aim to preserve the atmosphere of classic DOS adventures without requiring players to tolerate every inconvenience associated with early computer interfaces. The game is scheduled to cost approximately $10 or €9 when it launches on October 27. Its demo is currently available through Steam. Infested DX is a modern game inspired by retro adventures rather than a rediscovered commercial release from the DOS era. Nevertheless, it demonstrates how effectively those older design principles can still create tension. Apparently being trapped aboard a spaceship filled with hostile organisms never goes out of fashion.
