Halloween Brings Scheduled English Translation of PlayStation Horror RPG Ningyo no Rakuin After Twenty-Six Years
A dedicated fan-translation team completes an English patch titled The Curse of Ogaeritō for the obscure 2000 Japanese PlayStation horror RPG Ningyo no Rakuin.
Halloween 2026 has an especially interesting release scheduled for fans of obscure Japanese PlayStation games, with the fan-translation team behind Ningyo no Rakuin preparing an English patch under the title The Curse of Ogaeritō. The project was completed ahead of its announced October 31 release date, although a publicly downloadable build had not been independently confirmed at this digest's cutoff. Originally published in Japan in 2000 by Highwaystar and NEC Interchannel, Ningyo no Rakuin combines tactical role-playing mechanics with an unsettling supernatural horror story. Players follow Keisuke Tatebayashi and Mizuki Nakayama after surviving a plane crash near a remote Japanese island. Their situation deteriorates when a mysterious cult kidnaps Mizuki and places a curse upon her, transforming what initially appears to be an ordinary survival story into something considerably more disturbing. The fan translation is being created by Verneri Kontto, Chapu Translations, Laytonloztew and Whowasphone404. The team has specifically confirmed that no machine translation, large language models or generative AI were used to produce the English script. Their chosen title also reflects a deliberate translation decision, avoiding earlier English interpretations that incorrectly associated the game's setting with Lovecraft's Innsmouth. The project represents another valuable contribution to PlayStation preservation because many Japanese tactical adventures remained inaccessible to international audiences despite the console's enormous commercial popularity. The developers intend to distribute a patch rather than a complete copyrighted game image, meaning players will need compatible original game data. Until an actual download is confirmed, the release should be described as scheduled rather than already available. Halloween has always provided an excellent excuse to revisit classic survival horror. This year, enthusiasts may also have the opportunity to discover a particularly obscure PlayStation nightmare for the first time in English.
