GBC2DMG Is Trying to Make Pokémon Crystal Run on the Original Grey Game Boy
Developer ItsJustBshawn releases GBC2DMG beta, a conversion tool designed to backport Color-exclusive ROMs like Pokémon Crystal to Nintendo's 1989 monochrome Game Boy.
The Game Boy Color was designed to run old monochrome Game Boy software, but backwards compatibility traditionally travels in only one direction. Developer ItsJustBshawn has apparently looked at this perfectly sensible arrangement and decided it lacks ambition. GBC2DMG is a new beta-stage tool designed to convert Game Boy Color-exclusive ROMs into software capable of running on the original DMG Game Boy.
At present there is one enormous caveat: the tool supports precisely one game, Pokémon Crystal, specifically its European and US versions. That is nevertheless an impressive proof of concept because Crystal was explicitly designed as a Game Boy Color-only title rather than one of the earlier dual-compatible cartridges. The developer intends to broaden compatibility with additional GBC-exclusive software over time.
Retro News notes that, excluding aftermarket homebrew, 468 Color-exclusive games were released, leaving the project with 467 potential headaches once Crystal is conquered. More broadly, GBC2DMG belongs to an increasingly fascinating branch of retro development in which programmers are not merely preserving old games but deliberately moving them onto hardware considered too primitive when those games originally appeared. Playing Pokémon Crystal on a greenish 1989 display is objectively a technological downgrade, which naturally makes achieving it considerably more interesting.
