Game Boy Pixel Art Jam Returns With New 48-Hour Competition and Playable ROM Collection

The Game Boy Pixel Art Jam returns October 10–11 for a 48-hour competition compiling qualifying 160x144 artwork into a native Game Boy ROM.

The Game Boy Pixel Art Jam will return for a fourth edition on October 10 and 11, giving artists just 48 hours to create artwork within the visual restrictions of Nintendo's classic handheld. Organised by Philip Hunt together with the GB Studio Central community, the event welcomes both experienced pixel artists and complete beginners. Participants will receive the theme only when the competition begins, preventing artists from preparing entries beforehand. Each image must fit the Game Boy's native 160-by-144-pixel resolution, forcing participants to work within the same sort of severe visual constraints that shaped actual handheld games during the system's commercial life. The event goes beyond simply displaying entries online. Organisers intend to compile qualifying artwork into a genuine Game Boy-compatible ROM, allowing the entire gallery to be viewed using original hardware, flash cartridges or emulators. Physical cartridge editions of previous collections have also been produced at cost through InsideGadgets. Artwork created during earlier jams has subsequently appeared at events around Europe. The project occupies an interesting space between retro development, digital art and game preservation. Rather than merely imitating the appearance of Game Boy graphics on a modern high-resolution canvas, artists have to design for the actual machine's native limitations, creating work that can ultimately run as software on Nintendo hardware originally released in 1989.
