FunnyPlaying Says FPGB Mini Will Return in Around 20 Days but Stock Will Remain Extremely Limited

FunnyPlaying confirms its $69.99 FPGB Mini FPGA handheld will return to sale in approximately twenty days, with a second batch of 30 to 50 units planned after hardware revisions.

Yesterday's almost comically tiny launch of the FPGB Mini now has a follow-up. FunnyPlaying says its miniature FPGA-style Game Boy handheld should return to sale in approximately twenty days, although anyone hoping for plentiful stock should probably keep their expectations under control. The initial production run consisted of only twenty units worldwide and disappeared in roughly ten minutes. FunnyPlaying has now indicated that another batch of around thirty to fifty systems exists but will not be offered until after China's upcoming national holiday period. The company says the delay will also provide time to improve several issues discovered with the early hardware. Review units have revealed that certain Game Boy cartridges with large rumble housings cannot be inserted properly because of clearance around the cartridge slot, while the power switch on some units can feel unreliable. FunnyPlaying has also indicated that the FPGB Mini may receive future upgrades and additional shell colours according to market feedback. The $69.99 handheld combines an original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridge slot with microSD support, an 800x720 2.98-inch IPS display, RTC functionality, USB-C connectivity and a rechargeable battery. Demand clearly exists. The more immediate problem appears to be making enough of the things for anyone outside the world's fastest twenty retro collectors to actually buy one.
