Foxy's Run Squeezes a New 16-Colour Side-Scroller Onto the Amiga 500
Developer Vairn releases Foxy's Run, a compact 16-colour platformer engineered specifically for unexpanded stock Commodore Amiga 500 OCS systems.
Developer Vairn has released Foxy's Run, a new 16-colour side-scrolling platformer aimed at the Amiga 500 generation rather than requiring an accelerator, graphics card and small mortgage. The project appeared in the September 29 homebrew wave and is explicitly presented as an Amiga 500 game, placing it firmly in OCS territory.
That decision matters. Modern Amiga developers increasingly have a choice between exploiting upgraded or AGA hardware and deliberately working within the specifications millions of users actually knew during the machine's late-1980s and early-1990s peak. Foxy's Run chooses the latter, including the sort of deliberately compact colour palette that would have been entirely normal when the Amiga was a commercial games platform.
Restriction can be a feature rather than an inconvenience: designing around sixteen colours forces backgrounds, characters and hazards to communicate clearly instead of relying on enormous asset budgets. It also makes the resulting game practical for original Amiga 500 owners rather than merely people running heavily expanded machines or emulators. Vairn's itch.io catalogue describes Foxy's Run simply as a 16-colour side-scroller, which is refreshingly modest marketing in an industry where opening a door can apparently require a cinematic trailer. Sometimes a fox runs to the right. On an Amiga in 2026, that is quite enough to be interesting.
