Forest of Illusion Abandons the Amiga for Neo Geo as Ambitious Mickey Mouse Fan Game Reveals New Screenshots

Developer DomKid confirms that 16-bit Mickey Mouse tribute Forest of Illusion has shifted development from Commodore Amiga to SNK Neo Geo hardware with new visual previews.

An ambitious fan-made celebration of Mickey Mouse's 16-bit adventures has unexpectedly changed platforms. Developer DomKid has confirmed that Forest of Illusion, originally announced for the Commodore Amiga, is now being developed for SNK's Neo Geo hardware. The news emerged on October 16 following new screenshots and direct confirmation from the developer to retro-gaming specialist Time Extension. Forest of Illusion combines inspiration from four classic Disney games: Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion, Mickey Mania and Fantasia. Rather than recreating one particular adventure, DomKid intends to incorporate characters, enemies, environments and music associated with these titles into a new platforming experience. The project originally attracted attention in 2023 when an early Amiga version was demonstrated using the Scorpion Engine. The decision to move development to Neo Geo is therefore a substantial change rather than another routine progress update. The developer has also confirmed that artist Ansimuz is contributing improved graphics for the game's environments. DomKid hopes to finish the project before the end of 2026, although this remains a development target rather than a confirmed release date. The Neo Geo is an interesting destination because its arcade-oriented architecture offers considerable opportunities for colourful sprites and elaborate animation. However, producing software for the platform also involves different technical challenges from developing for the Amiga. No final distribution format or pricing has been announced, and the project remains an unofficial fan production rather than a licensed Disney release. For Amiga enthusiasts, losing a promising game is disappointing. Neo Geo owners, meanwhile, have unexpectedly inherited an ambitious platformer inspired by some of the Mega Drive's most memorable adventures. Mickey Mouse has apparently decided that changing consoles is considerably easier than changing his wardrobe.
