Firefly Squeezes a Complete Predator-and-Prey Arcade Game Into a 4KB Atari 2600 ROM
Developer retroromrunner releases Firefly, a tense 4KB 6502 assembly arcade homebrew for Atari 2600 where a glowing bug dodges an aggressive hunting shade.
Developer retroromrunner has released Firefly, a new Atari 2600 homebrew that demonstrates just how much game can still be hidden inside four kilobytes when somebody refuses to accept that 1977 hardware has retired. Players control a tiny firefly trapped in dark rooms while an increasingly quick shade hunts it. Collecting embers raises the score and eventually opens an exit positioned randomly along the top or bottom wall. After the second regular ember, a special white-blue power ember appears. Collecting it arms a single freeze ability, triggered with the fire button, which immobilises the shade for three seconds. The catch is that the power disappears when leaving the room, forcing a simple but effective decision: chase points and power-ups, or stop being heroic and escape while the opportunity exists. Each successive room increases the pressure by speeding up the pursuer. Contact produces the traditional Atari school of consequences: flash, unpleasant noise, back to the title screen. Firefly is written in 6502 assembly, occupies a 4KB ROM and runs in Stella, RetroArch or on compatible real hardware. Better still for preservation and education, its complete source code has been published on GitHub. Modern games occasionally require 100GB to explain their intentions. Firefly needs 4KB and a shade moving directly toward you.
