Echoes of Worlds Sends a Kidnapped Cat Across Sixteen Dimensions on Game Boy Color

Team Calamar and Broke Studio release The Echoes of Worlds, a brand new physical Game Boy Color roguelite platformer spanning 16 dimensions and skill-tree upgrades.

French homebrew team Team Calamar has released The Echoes of Worlds, an all-new roguelite platformer developed specifically for Game Boy Color and now available as a physical cartridge through Broke Studio's Homebrew Factory.

The premise begins with the sort of event that practically guarantees heroic escalation: the protagonist's cat is kidnapped by a thief from another dimension. Rather than accepting that interdimensional pet insurance probably does not cover the incident, our hero joins the Interdimensional Stability Brigade and pursues the culprit across sixteen environments. Platforming is combined with unlockable items, new abilities and a skill-tree system, giving the adventure more long-term progression than the average late-1990s handheld platformer.

The boxed edition costs €50 in Europe and contains the cartridge, cardboard tray and box, a full-colour printed manual, the ROM file and a digital PDF version of the manual. A free downloadable demo is also available for anyone wishing to verify that their reflexes remain compatible with Game Boy-sized platforms before buying the physical edition.

Releases like this demonstrate how thoroughly the Game Boy Color has escaped the normal definition of a discontinued platform. Developers are not merely producing novelty demos or colour hacks; increasingly they are designing substantial new commercial games around the limitations of Nintendo's 1998 hardware. The original GBC library stopped growing officially decades ago. Nobody informed the homebrew community, which seems determined to make the release calendar considerably less tidy.
