Early Symphony of the Night Design Document Revealed at Tokyo Game Show
Konami exhibits early Castlevania: Symphony of the Night development documents at Tokyo Game Show 2026, showing early Alucard sketches and foundational RPG mechanics.
Konami has opened a fascinating window into the development of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night by displaying early design documents at Tokyo Game Show 2026. Among the material is a preliminary screen mock-up showing a surprisingly cute, almost cartoon-like version of Alucard and several ideas that survived into the celebrated 1997 PlayStation game. Despite the rough visual style of the drawing, recognizable Symphony of the Night systems are already present. Enemy damage appears as RPG-style numerical values, a fairy companion floats behind Alucard and the interface contains an elaborate mechanical or steampunk flavour that anticipates elements of the final presentation. Even Alucard's movement appears to have been considered at this early stage, with the sketch suggesting the distinctive flowing walk animation that became part of the character's identity. The document is being displayed as Castlevania celebrates its 40th anniversary, making its appearance particularly timely. Development material for major 1990s Japanese games is not always publicly accessible, so seeing an early conceptual screen from one of the PlayStation era's most influential releases provides a rare opportunity to compare initial design thinking with the finished game that helped define what would later be called the Metroidvania genre.
