Dynasty Warriors 2 Remaster Will Add Online Two-Player Co-op After Launch

Koei Tecmo confirms at Tokyo Game Show 2026 that Dynasty Warriors 2 with Xtreme Legends Remastered will receive post-launch online two-player cooperative play by early 2027.

Koei Tecmo has revealed an important new feature for Dynasty Warriors 2 with Xtreme Legends Remastered: online two-player support will be added after release. The remaster combines the original 2001 PlayStation 2 Dynasty Warriors 2 with its 2002 Xtreme Legends expansion and is scheduled to launch on October 1, 2026. Local split-screen two-player play was already confirmed, but Koei Tecmo announced at Tokyo Game Show that online cooperation will arrive through a post-launch update, currently targeted for no later than around January 2027. The remaster is considerably more ambitious than a resolution upgrade. Visuals have been rebuilt using Unreal Engine 5, while several mechanics absent from the PS2 original have been introduced, including dodge actions, horse calling and a timing-based Just Power Guard system. At the same time, the core appeal remains recognisably Dynasty Warriors 2: wading into enormous crowds of soldiers and cutting through them in spectacular numbers. The finished game will feature 42 playable officers. Dynasty Warriors 2 is particularly significant historically because it established the large-scale battlefield formula that transformed Koei's earlier one-on-one fighting experiment into the Musou series we know today. Adding online cooperative play therefore gives one of the genre's foundational releases a feature that would have seemed rather futuristic on the PlayStation 2 in 2001.
