Dungeonette: The New Adventure Brings Sixteen Fantasy Realms to the ZX Spectrum Next

Software Amusements releases Dungeonette: The New Adventure on ZX Spectrum Next with 16 fantasy realms, 8-direction scrolling, and DMA audio.

Software Amusements has released Dungeonette: The New Adventure for the ZX Spectrum Next, expanding the availability of a fantasy action-adventure previously associated with the Amiga AGA. The October 16 release is available digitally for $5.99 or more and requires a Spectrum Next configuration with 2MB of memory. Players explore sixteen handcrafted environments ranging from forests and marshes to frozen mountains, volcanic landscapes and dark underground chambers. Each region contains enemies, obstacles, treasure and opportunities to improve equipment. Combat involves defeating monsters while searching for keys and useful objects. Between stages, players can visit Ye Olde Emporium to purchase upgraded weapons, armour, helmets and spells. The game includes a world map and an in-game minimap to assist navigation. Technical features include full-screen eight-direction scrolling, weather effects and digitally sampled environmental audio played through the Spectrum Next's DMA capabilities. Sound effects represent elements such as rain, wind, birdsong, thunderstorms and flowing lava. Keyboard and joystick controls are supported. The game is a particularly interesting demonstration of the distinction between the original ZX Spectrum and its modern Next successor. While the Next preserves important aspects of the classic machine's identity, its enhanced graphics and audio capabilities allow developers to create experiences far beyond what a standard 48K Spectrum could manage. Dungeonette uses those improvements to deliver a comparatively elaborate fantasy adventure. The result should appeal to players who enjoy old-fashioned dungeon exploration but appreciate more sophisticated audiovisual presentation. Apparently the Spectrum's traditional rubber keys were merely the beginning of its ambitions.
