Dragon Quest Series Passes 100 Million Worldwide Shipments and Digital Sales

Square Enix announces cumulative Dragon Quest series shipments and digital sales have surpassed 100 million copies worldwide during its 40th anniversary year.

Square Enix has announced a major milestone for one of Japan's most historically important RPG franchises: cumulative Dragon Quest shipments and digital sales have now passed 100 million units worldwide. The achievement arrives during the series' 40th anniversary year and covers four decades of releases stretching back to the first Dragon Quest on the Famicom in 1986. Series creator Yuji Horii marked the occasion as development continues on future entries. For retro players, the milestone is a reminder of just how broadly Dragon Quest has travelled across hardware generations. Early games appeared not only on Nintendo's Famicom but on Japanese home computers and MSX hardware, followed by extensive representation on Super Famicom, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance. Later generations brought remakes, ports and new instalments to PlayStation systems, Wii, Nintendo DS and 3DS, Switch, Xbox, PC and mobile devices. Dragon Quest's influence extends beyond its commercial numbers; its menu systems, character progression and storytelling helped establish conventions that became fundamental to Japanese console RPG design. With numerous early instalments now repeatedly restored and remade, the 100-million figure provides a useful moment to look back at a series whose history closely tracks the evolution of the Japanese games industry itself.
