Downtown Dash Brings Crazy Taxi-Style Arcade Racing to Atari Jaguar With Free Download and Open Source Code
Developer Dr Ludos releases Downtown Dash, a free open-source Crazy Taxi-style arcade racer developed for the Atari Jaguar during JagJam 2026.
The Atari Jaguar has received another original homebrew game, and this time its developers have decided that the famously temperamental console deserves a little urban driving chaos. Downtown Dash, created by developer Dr Ludos, combines elements of Crazy Taxi with the overhead perspective of early Grand Theft Auto games. Developed over six months for the JagJam 2026 event, the project is available as a free download. Players begin in a small three-dimensional city where they can explore freely before activating a timed challenge. Once the competition begins, they have twenty-nine seconds to reach as many checkpoints as possible, with each successful checkpoint awarding a point and adding five seconds to the remaining time. Naturally, the roads are filled with buses, police cars and other traffic that have absolutely no interest in helping players improve their scores. Two camera perspectives are available, including an angled view and a traditional overhead presentation. The developer used an existing Jaguar 3D game template, the U-235 sound engine and contributions from community artists and musicians. Particularly encouraging is the decision to release the game's commented source code under the MIT licence, allowing other Jaguar developers to study and reuse the technology. Dr Ludos also confirms that the project was created without generative AI. The current version is relatively simple, lacking some features associated with more elaborate arcade racers, but its score-chasing gameplay provides an entertaining foundation. The Jaguar's commercial life may have ended decades ago, but its homebrew community apparently believes that the streets are still open for business.
