Double Dragons Turns Double Dragon Into a Brawler Crossover Nobody Sensible Would Have Requested

Unofficial fan game Double Dragons merges Double Dragon, Kunio-kun, and Technos Japan's 1989 WWF Superstars arcade wrestling roster into a charity-supported beat-'em-up.

An unofficial fan game called Double Dragons has appeared, and describing it as merely a Double Dragon tribute would be rather like describing a wrestling battle royal as an organised meeting. The free project imagines an alternate sequel to Technos Japan's classic arcade brawlers, reusing and remixing locations from Double Dragon and Double Dragon II while dramatically expanding the playable cast. Billy and Jimmy Lee are joined by familiar enemies, Marian, Kunio from the Kunio-kun lineage, palette-swap favourite Jeff and — because apparently somebody left the crossover cupboard unlocked — the roster of Technos Japan's 1989 WWF Superstars arcade game.

That means players can take wrestling characters through Double Dragon streets while retaining substantial portions of their wrestling movesets. The game also tweaks combat with alternative attacks and more responsive controls, offers an optional Blood Mode and gives familiar stages a deliberately bizarre post-apocalyptic makeover. Additional modes reference IK+, Bruce Lee and WWF Superstars, turning the package into something approaching an archaeological dig through the developer's arcade memories. The creator states that newly produced artwork and code were made without generative AI. Double Dragons is available as a free/name-your-price download, with proceeds directed toward RAINN and Habitat for Humanity. It is completely unofficial, naturally, but as fan projects go it has embraced the most authentic arcade design philosophy imaginable: when uncertain, add another playable wrestler.
