Dizzy Returns to Sega Mega Drive as Oliver Twins Announce Eggcellent 40th Anniversary Collection
Philip and Andrew Oliver announce The Eggcellent Dizzy Collection, bringing three classic Dizzy adventures together for a physical Sega Mega Drive cartridge.
One of British gaming's most recognisable characters is preparing another adventure, and this time he is arriving on a proper Sega Mega Drive cartridge. Philip and Andrew Oliver announced The Eggcellent Dizzy Collection during the Crash Live event in Coventry on October 17, confirming plans to bring three classic Dizzy games together for Sega's 16-bit console.
The collection celebrates the approaching fortieth anniversary of Dizzy, whose first adventure appeared in 1987. The cartridge will contain Dizzy the Adventurer, Go! Dizzy Go! and Panic! Dizzy, offering a combination of traditional exploration, arcade action and puzzle solving. Dizzy the Adventurer sends our egg-shaped hero on a mission to rescue Daisy, while Go! Dizzy Go! concentrates on colourful maze-based challenges. Panic! Dizzy adds three different puzzle activities.
Interestingly, this is not simply another collection of ZX Spectrum or Commodore 64 software running through an emulator. The project aims to deliver a physical Mega Drive-compatible cartridge, reviving games associated with an earlier attempt to bring Dizzy to Sega hardware. The Oliver Twins are preparing a Kickstarter campaign, although crowdfunding has not opened and final pricing, production quantities and delivery dates remain unconfirmed. Fans can currently register their interest through the campaign's preview page.
The announcement demonstrates the continuing commercial appeal of British home-computer characters that never achieved the international recognition of Mario or Sonic. Dizzy remains an important part of gaming history because his adventures combined accessible controls with exploration, humour and occasionally infuriating puzzles. Nearly forty years after his debut, the world's most adventurous egg is apparently still refusing to retire. Hopefully someone has remembered to pack the bubble wrap.
