Data East's Edward Randy and Boogie Wings Are Returning in a New Nintendo Switch Arcade Collection

M2 announces The Edward Ragtimeshow Data East Collection for Nintendo Switch, bringing cinematic classics The Cliffhanger: Edward Randy and Boogie Wings back to fans.

Two wonderfully eccentric Data East arcade games are receiving another opportunity to escape the confines of increasingly rare original hardware. During its October 10 anniversary presentation, M2 demonstrated Nintendo Switch versions of The Cliffhanger: Edward Randy and The Great Ragtime Show, also known internationally as Boogie Wings. The projects have been grouped under the working collection title The Edward Ragtimeshow Data East Collection, with detailed Japanese and international coverage continuing through October 12. Edward Randy originally appeared in arcades in 1991 and remains memorable for its cinematic action, dramatic camera movements and spectacular set pieces. Players guide the titular adventurer through dangerous environments using a whip and a remarkably enthusiastic approach to destroying anything that gets in the way. The Great Ragtime Show arrived in 1992 and offers an equally extravagant mixture of shooting, vehicle switching and environmental destruction. Its chaotic gameplay allows players to commandeer different vehicles and improvise their way through increasingly absurd situations. M2's demonstrations showed both games operating on Nintendo Switch hardware with the company's characteristic M2 Gadgets information displays. These tools can provide useful details about gameplay systems, status and progression without changing the original arcade experience. Neither a release date nor pricing has been confirmed, and versions for additional platforms remain unannounced. Both titles have appeared in previous retro collections, so this is not their first preservation effort. However, a dedicated M2 release could offer a more convenient and technically focused way to experience them. Data East specialised in arcade games that seemed determined to include every exciting idea their designers could imagine. Edward Randy and Boogie Wings are excellent reminders that restraint was not always considered a desirable design feature.
