Classic Computing 2026 Begins Setting Up in Celle Ahead of a Weekend of Working Vintage Machines
The Verein zum Erhalt klassischer Computer begins setting up Classic Computing 2026 in Celle, Germany, offering hands-on exhibits of vintage computers, repair cafés, and history talks.
Classic Computing 2026 enters its official setup day today, October 8, at the CD-Kaserne in Celle, Germany. Organised by the Verein zum Erhalt klassischer Computer, the gathering brings together enthusiasts, collectors, museums and restoration specialists to celebrate the enormous variety of computing hardware developed before today's increasingly anonymous black rectangles took over. The event occupies Hall 10 at Hannoversche Straße 30b, with October 9 reserved primarily for exhibitors, association members, schools and the press. The public exhibition takes place on Saturday, October 10, from 10:00 to 18:00 and Sunday, October 11, from 10:00 to 17:00, with free admission. Visitors can expect functioning home computers, consoles, workstations, office machines and unusual historical systems, many available for hands-on demonstrations. A repair café will also provide practical assistance with restoration and maintenance. The programme includes presentations covering Commodore history, vintage computing technology, computer security and the preservation of historically important software and hardware. One particularly charming detail is the guestbook, which visitors can sign using an original 1987 Macintosh SE. Events like Classic Computing are valuable because preservation requires more than storing ROM files and photographing motherboards. Original machines need maintenance knowledge, replacement components and people willing to explain why a particular computer mattered. Today's preparations involve tables, cables and probably several conversations about incompatible video connectors. By Saturday, those efforts should produce something rather special: a working museum where touching the exhibits is sometimes actively encouraged.
