Centipede Crawls Onto Amiga OCS, ECS and AGA in a New Fan-Made Arcade Port
Developer acidbottle releases a faithful Amiga conversion of Atari's arcade classic Centipede for OCS, ECS, and AGA computers with mouse support and disk saving.
Developer acidbottle has released a beta of Centipede for the Amiga, bringing Atari's arcade classic to OCS, ECS and AGA machines in a new fan-made conversion. The release attempts to reproduce the original game's core arcade behaviour rather than merely borrowing the name and mushroom-filled premise: the descending centipede is joined by spiders, fleas and scorpions, and high scores can be saved to disk. Hardware requirements are pleasingly modest, with 512KB of Chip RAM plus another 512KB of RAM listed as sufficient. The game can be controlled using a conventional one-button controller or mouse, while ADF and LHA packages cover floppy-image and installed-machine use. WinUAE and other emulators are supported as well. This is explicitly beta 0.1, so acidbottle warns that further optimisation and debugging may be required and that speed can vary between configurations; a service menu provides speed and mouse adjustments. The developer also discloses AI assistance during development. The download is offered on a name-your-own-price basis, with profits beyond development costs promised to children's charities. Centipede is such an obvious fit for mouse-equipped Amigas that its arrival feels less like somebody invented a new port and more like a forty-year administrative error has finally been corrected. Spiders remain unhelpfully hostile.
