Konami kicks off Castlevania's 40th anniversary with a free mobile release of the original NES classic, a 46-LP soundtrack stream, and an enigmatic video teasing 3D Belmont adventures.

Castlevania officially turns 40 on September 26, and Konami has begun the celebrations one day early with considerably more than a cake shaped like Dracula's castle. The original NES Castlevania has been released as the free Castlevania: 40th Anniversary Edition app on iOS and Android. It can be claimed until October 24, and Konami says players who add it during the promotional period will continue to be able to redownload it afterwards.

The company is also preparing discounts across the series, anniversary merchandise and events, while the music contained in the enormous 46-LP Music from Castlevania - Black & Red collection is scheduled to reach streaming services on September 26. The more intriguing part, however, is Konami's anniversary video. One sequence shows Simon Belmont passing paintings representing 2026's Belmont's Curse alongside Curse of Darkness, Lament of Innocence and Lords of Shadow.

Some fans immediately interpreted that grouping as a hint towards a future collection focused on the 3D Castlevania titles. It is an interesting theory, particularly given the unusually deliberate selection of games, but it remains exactly that: a theory. Konami has announced no 3D collection.
