Black Horizon: Cinder Protocol Launches on Commodore 64 as Snack Break Games Expands Its Native 8-Bit Catalogue
Snack Break Games releases native Commodore 64 run-and-gun Black Horizon: Cinder Protocol for €4.99 with an eight-mission scrolling campaign.
The Commodore 64 has received another original action game, and this one arrives with considerably more firepower than the average 8-bit platform adventure. Black Horizon: Cinder Protocol is now listed in the native Commodore 64 catalogue at Snack Break Games, priced at €4.99 and distributed digitally in both PRG and D64 formats. The release is version 1.1.0 and is separate from the similarly named PC game still being developed by the publisher. Rather than attempting to reproduce the desktop edition on vastly less powerful hardware, the C64 version offers its own eight-mission scrolling run-and-gun campaign. Players move through coastal jungles, industrial docks, rain-soaked streets and increasingly dangerous installations before reaching the reactor core. Combat allows movement and aiming in eight directions, while equipment includes a rifle and grenades. Mission objectives extend beyond eliminating enemies, requiring players to rescue crew members, collect supplies and destroy fortified bunkers. Later missions introduce stronger defensive structures, heavier reinforcements and more aggressive enemy fire. Fire Dragon Interactive's associated Snack Break Games catalogue continues demonstrating that modern publishers can develop genuine native software rather than simply dressing contemporary games in retro-style graphics. Black Horizon includes original multicolour scenery, directional character sprites, animated water and reflections, alongside bespoke SID music and sound effects. Progression conveniences include checkpoints, mission codes, performance medals, unlimited retries and accessibility assists. The digital package is intended for compatible original Commodore 64 hardware or emulators, but no emulator or firmware is included. There is also no disk-based save system. At €4.99, Black Horizon offers a substantial new campaign for a computer introduced in 1982. Forty-four years later, apparently the C64 is still perfectly capable of sending heavily armed operators into exceptionally dangerous situations.
