Basilisk Brings Free Halloween Horror to Commodore 64 With Deadly Stares and Haunted Castle Exploration

Psytronik Software releases Basilisk, a free Halloween Commodore 64 horror adventure by Alf Yngve and Richard Bayliss set in haunted Chateau Roko.

Psytronik Software has released Basilisk, a free Halloween-themed Commodore 64 game that transforms an abandoned French castle into a particularly unpleasant destination for treasure hunters. Created by Alf Yngve with music by Richard Bayliss, the new release challenges players to explore Chateau Roko, a mysterious fortress hidden in a desolate mountain valley. Local villagers believe that the castle contains an enormous treasure, but unfortunately its corridors are also occupied by mythical creatures capable of killing adventurers with a single glance. The central mechanic revolves around avoiding the basilisk's line of sight. Players must use walls and environmental obstacles to remain hidden while navigating the castle and collecting points. A crucifix provides limited protection, temporarily blinding larger creatures and destroying smaller ones. However, simply turning away from an approaching basilisk does not guarantee safety. Its deadly gaze remains effective even when the player is facing another direction. Additional lives are awarded at 10000-point intervals, encouraging careful exploration and risk management. Basilisk was developed using an enhanced version of the Shoot 'Em Up Construction Kit, demonstrating how familiar Commodore 64 development tools can support unusual gameplay concepts. Psytronik distributes the game free of charge, with disk and tape formats referenced in its release documentation. The developer confirms testing on C64 Mini and Maxi systems, while conventional emulators such as VICE are also supported. Original-hardware operation is possible with suitable loading equipment. Basilisk offers an entertaining alternative to the usual Halloween collection of zombies, vampires and suspiciously energetic skeletons. Apparently the most dangerous thing in this castle is making eye contact with the wrong resident.
