Astropatank Gives the 3DO a New Flat-Shaded 3D Shooter Built From a DOS 386 and 486 Engine
Optimus6128 ports flat-shaded PC polygon shooter Astropatank to the 3DO, transforming software 386/486 math into a CEL-accelerated console pipeline.
An unusual 3DO homebrew project has entered today's wider retro-news feed with Astropatank from Optimus6128. PDRoms added the game to its 3DO coverage on 13 September, bringing fresh attention to a project whose experimental 3DO build was originally produced earlier in the summer. Astropatank began as a DOS game created around the developer's own top-down flat-shaded polygon engine targeting 386 and 486 PCs. The DOS version runs on a 386DX at 40MHz with 4MB of RAM, although the developer recommends a reasonably capable 486 to avoid slowdowns. The project was created for the DOS VGA+AdLib Jam 2026 before the engine and game were adapted to Panasonic, GoldStar and Sanyo's unusual 32-bit 3DO architecture. Gameplay places the player in control of a floaty spacecraft moving through a maze whose walls create deliberately bouncy handling. Mines must be destroyed while rings are collected throughout the environment. Collecting fifty rings opens a central gate allowing the player to warp out and complete the current objective. Shield and energy meters create two layers of survivability: collisions normally reduce shields, but once the shield is exhausted even bouncing into walls begins removing energy. Pickups restore shield or energy and can increase weapon power by allowing faster shooting. The project remains explicitly a work in progress rather than a lengthy finished campaign, with the developer acknowledging that additional levels, enemies, goals and optimisation could be added later. The 3DO beta is distributed as a roughly 41MB ISO, while source-code repositories are publicly available for both the original Astropatank work and the 3DO-specific conversion. The technical crossover is arguably more interesting than the current amount of content. The 3DO uses a completely different rendering architecture from a 386-era DOS computer, including its distinctive CEL graphics hardware capable of manipulating textured rectangular objects in ways that can be exploited for polygonal rendering. Optimus6128 has discussed how the hardware can fill quadrilateral regions once the CPU has transformed and projected the relevant geometry. That allows work originally explored through software rendering on old PCs to be translated into a console-specific hardware pipeline. Homebrew on commercially unsuccessful machines is especially valuable because professional developers had only a few years to explore the architecture. Every modern 3DO experiment helps answer what programmers might have discovered if the platform had survived longer.
