AROS Completes Major Migration to 64-Bit x86 With September 2026 ABI-v11 Release

The open-source AmigaOS reimplementation AROS completes its transition to a 64-bit x86 foundation with the ABI-v11 release, introducing USB 3 support and updated Nvidia drivers alongside legacy 32-bit emulation.

The AROS community has reached one of its most significant technical milestones in years. Version 2026.09 of the x86-64 ABI-v11 development branch completes the project's migration from its legacy 32-bit foundation to a modern 64-bit base system. The transition began in April 2025 and has required both operating-system work and the gradual porting of essential applications. AROS, originally named the Amiga Research Operating System, is an open-source reimplementation of AmigaOS concepts designed to run across contemporary and alternative hardware rather than requiring an original Commodore machine. The new release introduces recommended modern hardware profiles, USB 3 support and refreshed Nvidia 2D and 3D drivers. Most essential applications used by the AROS community have now been ported to 64-bit, while software that cannot yet be rebuilt is supported through an integrated emulator capable of running older 32-bit applications. The September release represents the base operating system rather than a finished consumer distribution. Updated versions of AROS One, AROS.games, AROS Portable and TinyAROS are being prepared around the new foundation. The same day also produced a remarkable concentration of Amiga-related software updates elsewhere. Copperline 0.20.0, a Rust-written Amiga emulator, adds two-player network play, a redesigned debugging workspace, a libretro core for RetroArch, improved save-state handling and support for additional hardware. Its Netplay implementation gives each side a complete emulated Amiga while using prediction and rollback techniques to synchronise play. xSysInfo 0.10.0 expands AmigaOS system reporting with WhichAmiga-compatible output, better drive diagnostics and a new software overview. AmigaOS 4's SDL port also reached 2.32.10 release 2 with additional texture, timing and OpenGL work. The collection of updates demonstrates how broad the Amiga ecosystem has become. Original 68k machines, PowerPC AmigaOS 4, AROS on x86-64 and emulators written in Rust are all evolving simultaneously. AROS's completed 64-bit migration may be the most consequential because it reduces dependence on architecture decisions inherited from decades-old systems while retaining familiar Amiga concepts. The project began as an effort to recreate an operating environment from the past. In 2026, it is increasingly becoming a modern operating system with historical DNA rather than simply an Amiga compatibility exercise.
