Anbernic Shows Its RG DDS Dual-Screen Handheld Running Nintendo 3DS Games and Modern Software
Anbernic shares new gameplay demonstrations of its dual-screen RG DDS clamshell handheld running Nintendo 3DS titles with Snapdragon G2 power.
Anbernic has released a new demonstration of its upcoming RG DDS handheld, giving retro-gaming enthusiasts a better look at a machine clearly inspired by Nintendo's dual-screen portable consoles. The October 16 promotional footage shows the device running games associated with the Nintendo 3DS, including Kirby's Blowout Blast, Pokémon Ultra Sun and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. More demanding software also appears in the demonstration, including Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate and Zenless Zone Zero. The handheld features two 720p displays, a stylus and a Qualcomm Snapdragon G2-series processor. Its clamshell arrangement makes it particularly interesting for players who find conventional single-screen emulation handhelds awkward when displaying Nintendo DS or 3DS games. The video also highlights several emulation and compatibility applications, suggesting that Anbernic intends to market the machine as a relatively versatile portable gaming device. However, manufacturer demonstrations should not be confused with independent performance testing. Smooth footage of selected games does not establish compatibility across entire libraries, and the RG DDS does not appear to reproduce the original 3DS's glasses-free stereoscopic display. Pricing and availability information circulating before the announcement was initially based on retailer listings rather than confirmed specifications. Buyers should therefore check official ordering information and independent reviews before committing. The RG DDS demonstrates how increasingly sophisticated retro handhelds are moving beyond simple Game Boy-style designs. Nintendo's dual-screen concept clearly still has admirers. The difference is that today's enthusiasts apparently expect their replacement handheld to run half the history of videogames.
