Anbernic Reveals the RG DDS, a Powerful Dual-Screen Handheld That Looks Suspiciously Familiar

Anbernic announces the RG DDS (Dream Dual-Screen), a clamshell handheld inspired by the New 3DS featuring dual displays, Snapdragon G2 Gen 2, stylus, and integer scaling.

Anbernic has officially revealed the RG DDS, short for Dream Dual-Screen, and anyone who remembers Nintendo's New 3DS will immediately recognise the inspiration. Announced on October 9, the new handheld combines two displays, a retractable stylus and Qualcomm's Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 processor in a clamshell design aimed squarely at enthusiasts of Nintendo's dual-screen generations. The upper display measures 4.7 inches with a 1200x720 resolution, while the lower 4-inch panel offers 960x720. Both screens are rated at 300 pixels per inch and 500 nits. A 6000mAh battery completes the announced hardware specifications. The display resolutions are particularly interesting because they allow integer scaling of original 3DS graphics, potentially producing cleaner images than conventional scaling methods. Unlike Nintendo's original machine, however, the RG DDS does not appear to support stereoscopic 3D. The company has also included a dedicated AI button, although its practical usefulness remains unclear. An Anbernic representative subsequently suggested pricing around $300 for an 8GB configuration, but that figure remains preliminary rather than a confirmed retail price. No release date has been announced. The RG DDS arrives during a remarkably competitive period for dual-screen retro handhelds, with manufacturers increasingly recognising that Nintendo's unconventional hardware cannot always be replicated comfortably on a single display. Whether Anbernic has finally produced the ideal replacement remains to be tested. At least the industry has rediscovered the revolutionary concept of putting two screens in a folding plastic box.
