Amiga Unix Revival Pushes Amix Toward 68040 and 68060 Hardware

The Amiga Unix community is reviving Amix for faster 68040/68060 systems with modern drivers, X11 work, cross-development tools and support for contemporary accelerator hardware.

Amiga owners have never been especially good at accepting the phrase 'that platform is finished', and the Amix revival is a particularly ambitious example. The community project around Commodore's historical Amiga Unix is working to make the operating system useful on faster 68040 and 68060 machines while rebuilding the development and driver ecosystem around it.

The project's public hub lists active work for hardware including the Z3660 accelerator, Commodore A4091/A4092 SCSI, ZZ9000 graphics, Hydra Ethernet and MNT VA2000 graphics. On the software side, the effort includes an m68k-cbm-sysv4 cross-toolchain, kernel tooling, X11R6.3, Mesa and even a Quake port. Amiberry is also part of the development bench, giving contributors an emulated environment alongside real machines.

A launch presentation was scheduled for Saku 2026 in Oulu, Finland on 19 September, with the project stating that packages, source, instructions and manuals would follow after the event. That wording is worth preserving: this is an active revival, not a claim that every component is already packaged as a finished distribution.

For retro hardware enthusiasts, the significance is broader than Unix novelty. Amix was always one of Commodore's strangest professional branches. Giving it modern drivers and a maintainable toolchain turns a historical curiosity back into something people can actually experiment with.
