Amiga Console Replacement CCON 1.3.0 Makes Classic Command-Line Work Dramatically Faster
CCON version 1.3.0 brings optimized compiled C rendering routines and direct display memory writing to AmigaOS 3.x, accelerating Shell output by up to five times.
Tobias Karlsson's CCON console replacement has received version 1.3.0, with the update receiving fresh coverage on October 9. The software provides an alternative console handler for AmigaOS 3.x, offering improved command-line functionality, output history and keyboard shortcuts familiar to users of the established KingCON utility. The latest release focuses heavily on performance. Frequently used output operations now execute through compiled C routines, while suitable text can be drawn directly into display memory instead of passing through slower conventional rendering paths. The software automatically chooses appropriate methods depending on the hardware and screen configuration. According to the developer's benchmarks, the new version runs approximately four times faster than version 1.2.7 on an emulated stock Amiga 1200 and five times faster on a real A1200 equipped with PiStorm acceleration. Those figures are developer measurements rather than independently verified universal results. Additional improvements include automatic scrolling optimisations, command completion, word-based cursor movement, configurable scrollbars and better handling of window resizing. Numerous longstanding bugs have also been addressed, including problems involving colour sequences, fonts and console output during screen changes. The developer has documented the changes and made the release available through the project's public repository. Although a faster command-line window might not sound as exciting as another arcade conversion, utilities like CCON make original Amiga environments considerably more pleasant to use. The Amiga was once celebrated for making computers friendlier through graphical interfaces. Four decades later, enthusiasts are still working to make typing commands into a window less annoying.
