ALBERT 3.2.1 Gives Commodore 64 Artists a Modern Cross-Platform Editor for Border-Breaking Pixel Art

The Commodore 64 scene has received an important creative-tool update with the release of ALBERT 3.2.1 on 13 September. Developed primarily by Luigi Di Fraia, known in the scene as The Chaos Engineer, with graphics, design and testing from Joachim Ljunggren, better known as The Sarge, ALBERT is a modern cross-development pixel-art application specifically designed around unusual Commodore 64 graphics techniques. Instead of functioning as a generic sprite editor with a C64 palette added as an afterthought, ALBERT allows artists to create images that extend beyond the machine's conventional visible screen into the left and right or upper and lower border regions. Sprites are used to display the extra pixels, and the workflow is designed so artists can create these extended images without requiring a dedicated programmer to manually build the border-display code around their artwork. That makes techniques traditionally associated with highly technical demos considerably more accessible to visual artists. ALBERT project files preserve the application's effectively unlimited undo and redo history, allowing individual work stages to be revisited later. Those stages can also be exported as PNG images, making it possible to build time-lapse videos documenting an artwork's creation. The software can import ordinary PNG files and convert them toward Commodore 64 palette restrictions using nearest-colour matching, Floyd-Steinberg error-diffusion dithering or ordered Bayer dithering. A weighted colour-distance method is included because straightforward Euclidean colour comparison does not always produce results that correspond well with the perceived luminance relationships of the C64 palette. Curves controls allow individual colour channels or the entire image to be adjusted before conversion. Version 3.2.1 is distributed for Windows in both installer and portable forms, GNU/Linux as a Flatpak and ARM-based macOS systems as a disk image. Sample projects are also available. CSDb lists the release under Hokuto Force and dates it specifically to 13 September. Tools like ALBERT are an important part of why contemporary C64 development has become so sophisticated. Modern developers no longer need every editor, assembler and graphics package to run on a 1MHz computer. They can use contemporary workstations to prepare assets while still targeting authentic VIC-II behaviour. In practice, that means the machine's technical limits can be explored more deeply now than many commercial artists had time to manage in the 1980s.
