Abxylute Launches M5 and M6 Controllers to Turn Smartphones Into Sliding Retro Handhelds

Abxylute kickstarts the M5 and M6 sliding smartphone controllers, offering PSP Go-inspired form factors with linear rumble and macro controls for mobile retro emulation.

Accessory manufacturer Abxylute has launched a crowdfunding campaign for two compact smartphone controllers, the M5 and M6, aimed at players who want physical controls without carrying a separate gaming handheld. The devices use a sliding mechanism that allows a smartphone to be positioned above the controller, producing a form factor reminiscent of Sony's PSP Go. Both models feature an improved sliding rail, dedicated macro buttons and linear rumble motors. The principal difference concerns connectivity and power. The slimmer M5 operates through a wired USB-C connection and does not require an internal battery, while the thicker M6 includes its own battery and offers a different approach to portable use. Early crowdfunding prices are listed at $59 for the M5 and $65 for the M6. Although these are contemporary mobile accessories, they are relevant to the retro-gaming market because smartphones have become increasingly capable emulation platforms. A compact physical controller can make classic handheld, arcade and console software considerably more pleasant to play than relying on touchscreen controls. The products follow Abxylute's earlier experiments with mobile gaming accessories and reflect growing competition in the portable-controller category. As with any crowdfunding campaign, prospective buyers should distinguish between announced specifications and independently verified production performance. The M5 and M6 are interesting designs, but ergonomics, durability and compatibility still need proper testing. Retro gaming enthusiasts may eventually discover that the most convenient new handheld is simply the phone they already own, provided somebody gives it a decent directional pad.
