The controversy surrounding The James Pond Legacy: The Pond Is Not Enough has escalated again, with System 3 CEO Mark Cale saying developer Antstream misled his company about the role of generative AI in the project's artwork. System 3 had previously issued statements saying no generative-AI assets were present in the game, comments made after fans noticed unusual imagery in promotional material and the project's first trailers. Cale now says those assurances were based on information supplied by Antstream, the external studio handling development and artwork. According to Cale, System 3 was not directly involved in creating the questioned assets. He has shown journalists a statement provided by Antstream in December 2025 describing a pipeline in which original 2D concepts were fed into a model to estimate volume and lighting, producing pseudo-3D drafts that artists would then repaint, rerender and finalise manually. Antstream characterised the finished assets as human-authored with algorithms used only for intermediate visualisation. The dispute centres on whether that description adequately disclosed generative AI. Cale argues that if generative AI was used at all, the information should have been made explicit. The issue matters beyond one collection because James Pond Legacy is marketed partly as an archival celebration of a historical game series. Retro audiences increasingly expect preservation products to distinguish clearly between original materials, newly commissioned artwork and machine-generated reconstructions. The James Pond franchise began during the 16-bit era and became closely associated with hand-drawn pixel graphics, magazine advertising and distinctive European character art. Repackaging that history with unclear asset provenance risks undermining the museum-like credibility such collections increasingly seek. The development arrangement also illustrates a wider reality of contemporary retro publishing. Rights holders often license or outsource compilation work to specialist companies rather than building emulator frontends and archival features internally. That means the publisher's public claims can depend on information received from contractors. Clear documentation and asset tracking become essential. The underlying collection still includes four James Pond games, save-state features, filters and a digital museum, but the ongoing AI dispute is now threatening to overshadow the software itself. System 3 and Antstream will need to clarify the final production pipeline before launch if they want the collection to function as a credible celebration rather than a case study in opaque modern asset creation.
