Funny Playing has disclosed the first detailed specifications for its upcoming FPGB Mini, a compact FPGA-based handheld designed to play original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges alongside ROM files stored on microSD. The machine resembles a shrunken original DMG Game Boy and uses a 2.98-inch IPS TFT panel with an unusual 800 by 720 resolution. That resolution provides enough pixels for clean high-multiple scaling of the Game Boy family's 160 by 144 image while preserving the nearly square proportions of Nintendo's original displays. The handheld contains an original-style 32-pin GB and GBC cartridge slot, allowing commercial cartridges to save normally through their onboard save hardware. ROM-based saves are instead stored on the SD card. A removable 1,800mAh lithium-polymer battery is rated for approximately four to six hours of operation and charges over USB-C at 5V/1A, with a full charge expected in roughly two to three hours. The device measures approximately 113 by 64 by 22 millimetres and weighs around 135 grams with its battery installed. MicroSD cards up to 32GB using FAT32 are supported, and audio comes through a 0.5W speaker. Funny Playing has also confirmed link-cable functionality, although the device requires the company's own USB-C link cable rather than using Nintendo's original connector. Flash-cartridge and clone-cartridge compatibility is not guaranteed; some may work, but the company is warning buyers not to assume universal support. Pricing and final retail date remain unannounced. The FPGB Mini is particularly interesting because it joins a growing class of FPGA handhelds designed around physical cartridges rather than treating ROM collections as the only source of software. Original Game Boy cartridges remain abundant enough that many collectors still maintain functioning libraries, while ageing original screens and power electronics make replacement hardware increasingly attractive. FPGA designs attempt to reproduce console logic at hardware level rather than emulating the CPU and peripherals through software, potentially offering highly accurate timing when implementations are mature. The removable battery is also a welcome preservation-conscious choice. If Funny Playing gets cartridge compatibility, display scaling and battery behaviour right, the FPGB Mini could become a particularly appealing bridge between original Game Boy collecting and modern portable hardware.
